STEP-BY-STEP ON HOW TO USE FORM 2290:

A- To start a return:

A1) Start by selecting Form 2290 on the home page;

A2) Move down the page a click on the bar that says “Click here to start your Taxsoftware.com Informational return;”

A3) Click on ACCEPT ;

A4) Click on NEW at the top of the page;

A5) Fill in the name and address web page;

 

A6) Select Excise Tax and the correct tax year;

A7) Click on NEXT;

A8) Select Form 2290;

A9) Click on NEXT;

A10) Fill in the first screen and click on NEXT;  Repeat the process until the Tax computation screens.

 

A11) On the screen below you can enter multiple VINs.  Start be entering one.  See the word “New#2” below the name you just entered in the Name 1 box and is showing inside the list box at the top of the page;

A12) Click on the “New#2” work and fill out the second return’s information below.

A13) Follow these steps until you entered all the returns

B- To create a spreadsheet:

IMPORTANT - YOU MUST FOLLOW OUR INSTRUCTIONS TO CREATE A SPREADSHEET.  IF YOU MAKE UP YOUR OWN TEMPLATE IT WILL NOT WORK.

B1) Click on EXPORT.

B2) A spreadsheet template will be created and EXCEL will be launched.

Or

Click here to download a spreadsheet.  Save the spreadsheet in your computer. Then open the file directly form your computer and follow the instructions below complete it.

B3) Paste or type your data for the other forms into the spread sheet.

Please note that you must have a Key number, which starts on zero. Code 500 is your VIN, 520 is the weight of the vehicle, 510 is the category. Code 530 is option a. Vehicles Except Logging, and code 540 is option b. logging vehicles. Please an "X" on the column to make your selection. Code 550 is the date vehicle was first used after July, if a partial-period.  If you used the vehicle for the entire tax year, you can leave the last column blank.

B4) Number the rows from 0 to 100. One ROW is one truck.  Do not change the column headings. Each column is one field, such as name, address, city, state, zip, amount etc.

B5) Click on SAVE and save the file as a CSV file;

B6) Go back to the web site click on IMPORT.

B7) All of your data will be imported back to the website.

C- To pay your taxes through a bank account:

C1) Please make the selections as shown in the screen below. You must check "Check here to pay electronically with this tax return," and line 4b.

C2) Click on NEXT and enter your bank account on the screen shown below.

C3)Then click on NEXT.

D- To pay for Taxsoftware.com's e-filing services:

D1) Select your file and click on the PAY button at the top of your web pages.

D2) Enter your credit card information on the screen shown below and click on SUBMIT FORM.

E- To Edit:

E1) From the same computer where you entered your data click on the bar that says “Click here to do your tax return;”

E2) Click on ACCEPT;

E3) Click on the file inside the gray box, and then click on the EDIT icon at the top.

E4) You can edit your return as many times as you want, until you are sure it is correct. Make sure you print and check it before you e-file. There is no limit of time for you to have access to you return, but make sure you follow the IRS deadlines.

F- To print:

F1) From the same computer where you entered your data go to the page shown above "Taxsoftware.com Start Web Page".

F2) Click on the PRINT ALL button to print you entire tax return.

or click on EDIT and select the specific page that you wish to print and click on PRINT to print just the form on that page.

F3) When you are using ACROBAT, make sure the ANNOTATIONS or COMMENTS box is checked on the print dialog screen. Depending on the version you have, it could say “Print documents and annotations,” or similar language.  Make sure you are using Acrobat 5.05 or later. Earlier versions of Acrobat may not print correctly. If you have a color printer, make sure you have blue color, or set it to print blank only. F4) You can print your return as many times as you want, until you are sure it is correct. Make sure you print and check it before you e-file. There is no limit of time for you to have access to you return, but make sure you follow the IRS deadlines.

G- To e-file:

G1) From the same computer where you entered your data go to the page shown above "Taxsoftware.com Start Web Page".

G2) Click on the file, then press the EFILE button. The return is not e-filed until you press the EFILE button.

G3) Then you must press the CONFIRM button. If the CONFIRM button does not show up you can manually launch the web page from Internet Explorer with the Browse button to find the file c:\btax\senddata.html If there is a balance due press the "Click to Pay".

G4) You will receive an email within minutes indicating your forms have been ACCEPTED. Your stamped Schedule 1 copy will be sent by e-mail at the same time of your acceptance

G5) If you do not receive this email, your forms have NOT been E-Filed. The E-Mail will contain and acknowledgement file #. You will need this number for proof of your E-File if you need to later contact the IRS.

G6) If there is any problems with your return or the IRS requires additional information you will receive an email indicating the file was REJECTED.

G7) Then you need to return to the web site and fix any errors. You can see your IRS errors on the REVIEW screen by pressing the ERRORS button

G8) To e-file states for Information Returns, you must check the "Check here to report data to states box".

G9) Go to Form 8453-EX page and click on the PRINT button as shown below.

G10) Then you must print, sign and fax Form 8453-EX and the State release form (if applicable) to 301-320-1216.
